“Authenticity in Voiceover” a Positive Motivation session with Debra Sperling! Accompanied by a Q&A

Jul 11, 2023 | Booth Chat | 19 comments

Debra Sperling is an internationally renowned voiceover artist and voiceover coach but is best known in our industry for her acclaimed “Authenticity in Voiceover” workshop, which has helped students worldwide discover their unique, authentic voice and achieve tremendous creative breakthroughs in their work.

I’ve been extremely keen to invite Debra in to do a coaching session with us, as I’ve heard truly amazing things about her methods, but sadly, due to the intimate and deep-dive nature of her classes, it would be impossible to replicate in a typical Booth Chat session.

However, Debra has suggested an alternative event that we could all benefit from at Booth Chat… An inspirational VO discussion with a question and answer session which she is positive will help us in our auditions which will lead to booking more jobs! Debra has hosted many sessions like this in the past and says they are always a tremendous success, and a very meaningful experience!

She has suggested that if you are interested in coming along to this FREE event, first listen to this podcast interview she recently did with VO Booth Besties and have a think about questions or frustrations you have regarding the craft and performance side of voice over (not business and marketing).

Then, let me know in the comments section below if this sounds of interest to you and importantly if you would definitely like to attend. If there is a sufficient number of interested people Debra and I will try and find a date and time, probably in September.

You know I LOVE Debra! Her “Authenticity in Voiceover” class is lifechanging and would indeed be impossible to replicate in Booth Chat as it’s such a unique approach and deep dive. I’ve already listened to her interview (I try to listen to all of her interviews as they always motivate me!) and I would *definitely* attend any session with her. Thanks so much, Tom!

Hey Tom. Good catch… I think this is a great idea, providing there’s focus. The only downside of Q&As I’ve noticed is that it’s easy to end up discussing something in infinite and sometimes unnecessary detail. One way around this might be to enable Zoom’s Q&A feature, which allows participants to submit a question, and for the other participants to give it a thumbs-up if it’s something they’d like answered. This can help prioritise which questions to deal with, when time is limited, although it CAN mean that a fascinating question doesn’t get the attention it might warrant, if it’s submitted late in the process…
    Food for thought, perhaps.
Any which way, thanks for your tireless (but doubtless tiring) efforts to bring tip-top people to Booth Chat!

Thanks for your thoughts Anthony, I see your concern. I’ll raise it with Debra but she was telling me that she has done these sessions many many times so I’m guessing she has a pretty well thought out process. I’ll absolutely mention it to her though because you’re right, it would need structure!

Oh I’m sure she has – my comment was based only on more general Q&A sessions I’ve been at. Any which way, I’ll be in attendance, clashes notwithstanding. Thanks, Tom

Would love to be part of this. The rise of authenticity seems to be a troublesome one – authentic accent please – do you mean “comic book over exaggerated” dear casting director?? Authentic character please- do you mean you need to have experienced this to be able to voice it dear casting director? And what if my authentic is not your authentic- who defines?. As an actor in film and stage trained in various “authentic techniques” I have found being able to be a chameleon in the booth is becoming more and more necessary. My doctorate in social connections (yes I am also a doctor- hahaha) exposed so many human flaws as we no longer know who our authentic selves really are. So who really defines it. Or simply a lazy catchphrase for casting – sorry you weren’t the authentic we were looking for??? Love the juicy topic. Count me in.

Wow Nicky this is really interesting, just the sort of topic I’m sure we can all get our teeth into in the discussion with Debra! Thanks for your input
